Boat Launching Ceremony Preparations

On June 3,’10, a 36m. Ketch, the beautiful princess was  launched into the sea where the Mediterranean and the Aegean sea meet. You  can see the awesome pictures of the boat launching ceremony preparations here. The boat was constructed in Marmaris, Turkey, The Aegean Sea , closer  to the Mediterranean Sea as well, and sold to Portugal, so will most probably be in the Atlantic Ocean soon . The Boat masts were installed at sea. What a gorgeous boat it is! You just can’t help admiring it, right ?

It is a 10 m. laminated magohany speed boat.90% of this beautiful boat has already been finished. The impressive cute baby is waiting for its owner. Wish I were there when it is in the sea.

Summer Schools in the US

Is the US still the dream country of most people? Well, I am sure it is. It is really worth seeing. Whenever I sit on a bench to have a rest and look, I am usually surprised to see a lot of different people passing by sometimes thinking if there are more than 4 main races. How beautiful those people of mixed blood are.You cannot see these extraordinary types so many  and so often anywhere in the world I guess.  The point is so many different rooted people have come together in this dream country and somehow have learnt how to manage peaceful co-existence. So colorful! So amazing! So incredible!    

One of the ways to visit this country especially for students is attending summer schools. I have been taking students abroad  as a group leader – chaperone for years. When you go abroad especially in charge of some children, it is important to know the quality of summer school and tour organisation. In  the US, Royal Language Training Summer School  is a good choice to me in terms of language practice and amusement. As we know each other well, we can handle any problems that may come up  easily together. You should also choose a summer school for yourself and get to know them. Have an experience. Maybe it is better to try other summer schools but as I feel more confident this way, I always  prefer the same summer school in  different states such as CA,VA, FL and trips to many such as NY, MD, PA WV, courses and trips even in Canada.So you see alternatives are in different places. Well, the name is  summer schools but we have joined winter tours of Royal LT to visit the universities in the US. I can't forget the one we had in 2007 winter, in that the first stop was NYC, and staying in different states, it ended in Miami in the Southern east. We had icy weather in NY below zero  but we swam in the ocean in Miami. The students had even an opportunity to watch an NBA game in Orlando. Fantastic!

You don't have to be a student to join the trips . Even the adults have alternatives at summer school programs.

Apricot Oil for Natural Skin Care

The apricot is a delicious small yellow to orange soft fruit. It has a single pit inside and at the core of the pit is the apricot kernel which has vitamins and minerals. Apricot kernel oil is expressed by crushing the apricot kernel and cold pressing process. This oil is ideal for a moisturising and nourishing emollient for total skin care. It is used in skin care products. It is very effective for the delicate sensitive skin and it is a good choice of skin care oil for people with dry skin as it is readily absorbed, while the gentleness of apricot kernel oil makes it mild enough to use on the elderly.

Apricot kernel oil  is also used as a carrier oil, a base for aromatherapy mixtures. With the property of ready absorbtion into the skin without leaving an oily residue behind, it is an excellent choice of carrier oil for all skin types. It is well suited to skin care. For skin nutrition, apricot kernel oil is high in vitamins A and E and contains the essential fatty acids oleic and linoleic. All of these substances can make even irritated skin sooth and moisturize. Apricot kernel oil can keep skin smooth and flexible if you apply it regularly. Just apply the oil to the delicate tissues around the eye at bedtime, or use as an eye make-up remover.

Apricot kernel oil is also used in lotions, creams, and balms, as well as in soaps. It is frequently used in massage oils as well.

When purchasing apricot kernel oil for skin care use, make sure that it is labeled that it contains no preservatives, synthetic antioxidants or additives, and no solvents are used in its extraction.  

Apricot Oil should be packed in brown bottles to prevent the harm of the sunlight and air  and should be stored tightly closed in a cool dark place below 30 deg C.

No Sooner… Than…/ Hardly… When…

No sooner .. than … or hardly/scarcely/barely …when.. is used in the meaning of As soon as…but when the sentence starts with them, that part is used in “invention“ like the question form and in the past perfect tense.

Examples:

No sooner had I entered the room  than I noticed her.

Hardly had I entered the room when I noticed her.

Idioms and Expressions

Idioms are the most difficult words to remember while learning a foreign language because they don’t have literal meanings, that is to say, the literal meaning of the word is totally different from the idiom, although it is the same word, the meaning changes with a preposition or adverb or another word. It goes without saying that even without an addition of anything the same word has a lot of different meanings in the sentence. I would like to give an example word and show some different meanings of the same word. Let ‘s study “TAKE” together.

Take (took-taken-taking) has a great amount of meanings:

1. To get; use; have(buy/rent); to remove from someone’s possession by stealing or by mistake

I often take a taxi to go to the airport.

She’ll take a shower.

We’ll take the apartment.

Model United Nations, MUN

Model United Nations, also abbreviated as Model UN or MUN, is an academic simulation of the United Nations that is organised by mostly universities all over the world, mostly in the US and Europe and mostly for high school students. MUN aims to educate participants about civics, current events, effective communication, globalization and multilateral diplomacy. In standard Model UN, students take on roles as diplomats from A to Z of a member country chosen and participate in a simulated session of an intergovernmental organization (IGO) such as General Assembly or Security Council. Participants research a country, but not their own country, take on roles as diplomats of that country, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems from the points of view of that country which is chosen by the org. body  from the alternatives –member countries of the UN- given by the participants. MUN is curricular in most of the high schools and it is also an extracurricular activity in some schools where the students choose to join MUN as a club.
Some financial aid is also given by the organisation  to the participants who are in need of money for travel, kind of  accommodation expenses during the MUN  conference .

Apart from this, eligibility mostly is based upon interest and knowledge in social and political issues, ability for debate, ambition to be a good diplomat, being able to afford all the expenses  for the conference held abroad. MUN is really one of the best  organisations for high schools all over the world. To be a participant at a MUN conference will surely contribute a lot to your personality, to your way of thinking analytically and see the college life closely for your future plans. Making international friends from all over world is a perfect addition to all the pleasures mentioned above. I attended a lot of MUN conferences held by Harvard, Yale, Johns Hopkins which were my wonderful experiences as a faculty adviser.I can say that the success certificate that you get from the conference is much more effective than the diploma.

Take Care of Yourself

Do you really take care of yourself? What do you do for yourself? For your body ? For your skin? For your selfdevelopment? For your soul? How do you take care of them?

We are all unique. We are one of the 7 milliard people on earth and each of us is unique. So we are all important. Our body, our soul is sacred so we are supposed to take care of ourselves. As each of us is unique, we are different from each other and our needs are different. We can only  mention how to take care of ourselves and  handle our needs and problems in general.

The main point is cleanness. We should keep our body, skin, hair clean and wellcared according to our skin type or hair type. The tips are not to clean our face with soap. Instead we can use mild tonic like rose water. Aromatherapists  prefer absolute rose water. We shouldn’t put on too much cosmetics, even none . We should avoid using powder, foundation cream, eye shadows.They have chemicals and harm our skin. We can prefer organic ones or none. Or we can use natural materials such as milk, honey, lemon juice...You can cleanse your skin with milk and nurture it or make honey masque or use lemon juice to tighten the pores as well as for its antiseptic effect. Honey is also useful for your hair. You can put some honey in your shampoo and wash your hair. Moisturising your skin with an appropriate cream  is also important to prevent wrinkles and lines.

For our body, we should get the harmful junk food, fried food, too much carbohydrates, sugar, too much salt  out of our list. We can eat anything except for these but the amount is important. How much you eat is much more important than what you eat.

And walk for your life as often as you can. Exercise, walking and swimming .. they are the miracles to keep fit.

 On top of all, what you feel is very crucial. If you know how to enjoy your life then the radiant of this positive energy will make you very charming. And the love of life in your eyes is much more meaningful than anything. Love and respect come first.

Hobbies and interests seem to be only fun, in fact they play very meaningful roles in our lives. If you have a lot of interests and hobbies, you will enjoy your time. Think of a person who knows how to play some musical instruments, they can make others have fun, as well. Music is a very good  means of spending  quality time alone or with others.

Sports and games are also very effective ways of  having a nice time in a healthy way. This sort of hobbies and interests are also a very practical way for self-discipline. Dance, they say, is the golden key of happiness. It is a real fun of life. Music, sports, dance, playing chess, bridge, etc., cooking, acting, writing, knitting, sewing.. so many others. It also depends on our talents as well.

I think having hobbies and interests are much more important than our career. If you have a very successful education period and have your diploma but no time for good quality hobbies or interests, you don’t know what to do in your spare time, when you don’t have to work, you just watch tv or rest. This seems to be nice at first but you get bored later on .

We should have interests and hobbies that will make us have fun, more energetic and sociable and have a nice time even  when we are retired.

33 Chilean Trapped Miners

The rescue operation has already started 69 days after 33 Chilean miners were trapped in a collapsed mine a half-mile underground in SAN JOSE MINE, Chile.
Here’s their plan to rescue them: There is a narrow hole that's only wide enough to fit one man that will take a rescue worker down in a 13-foot-tall escape capsule. The rescue worker will then start the operation, and the miners will be hauled back to the surface one at a time in the capsule he rode down on. If everything  goes well, it could take as little as 11 minutes to as long as half an hour or more. During the possibly long trip back to the surface, the miners will have a hands-free phone to communicate with rescue workers.
Rescuers began pulling 33 men one by one to fresh air and freedom at last on Wednesday, using the missile-like escape capsule. It was specially created and  designed by an American technician. They were pulled to the surface from their underground prison nearly 2,300 feet /700 meters below to laughing rescuers, to hugs , cheers and tears.
Five men were pulled out in the first five hours of the apparently problem-free operation in the Chile's Atacama desert. Up to now 7 miners were rescued and the last one was a 19 year-old-miner Jimmy Sanchez.
Florencio Avalos was the first rescued miner, who wore sunglasses to protect him from the glare of bright lights. He smiled broadly as he emerged and hugged his sobbing 7-year-old son, Bairon, and wife, then got a bearhug from Chilean President Sebastian Pinera shortly after midnight local time.
A second miner, Mario Sepulveda Espina, was pulled to the surface about an hour later. His shouts were  heard even before the capsule surfaced. He hugged his wife first, Elvira, and his daughter then he handed rescuers souvenir rocks he brought from his underground prison nearly 2,300 feet (700 meters) below.Then he jumped up and down as if to prove his strength before the medical team took him to a triage unit.
Espina said later in a special interview room set up by the government,"I think I had extraordinary luck. ... I was with God and with the devil — and God took me."
He praised the rescue operation, saying: "It's incredible that they saved us from 700 meters below." He thanked all the rescuers and said,  “Love is the most beautiful thing.”

The Present Perfect is used to express an action happened at an unspecified time before the present time. Specific time expressions such as: yesterday, one year ago, last week, when I was a child, when I lived in Japan, at that moment, that day, one day, etc.cannot be used with the present perfect tense. You can use unspecific expressions such as: ever, never, once, many times, several times, before, so far/ up to now, already, just, yet, recently/lately, since, for etc.

The Most Expensive Purses of the World

I like purses, shoes and belts. Who doesn’t? They are the most important accessories of women. I remember once a friend said.”My shoes are so important they should look gorgeous so i polish them each time  i put them on, well, i may forget to brush my hair but never my shoes.

But when it comes to spending lots of money on them, my brain stops. Ok, it is a big industry to produce shoes and purses and maybe a sort of "Art" as well, but when it is extremely expensive, it means it is luxurious and I am against any kind of luxury. Do you think I need to make sort of emphathy to the richies? Oh, no. When you think of lots of hungry and  jobless people all over the world, you cannot spend that huge amount of money on a purse. 

Once while I was on a trip with my students on the 5th Avenue in NYC, one of the girls came near me and said,” i wanna buy a Gucci bag from the Gucci store here . Can you help me?” “Sure, i can.” i said and went into the store together. Is it the main, "number 1" store of Gucci in the world ? Hell, dunno. She liked one of the tiny miny purses like an envelope with Gucci initial amblems on the cloth-like part so i guessed only some band parts were made of leather. We asked the price and learnt that it was $700 and she said OK. She counted $700 right in front of my wide opened eyes without letting me say,”Are you sure?” She said she had entered the Gucci website the nite before and chose that one. May you be happy to use it, my girl!!!

I should accept and confess that they are very cute. They are awesome. Out of this world! Kind of pride to have one of them. However, I am not so sorry that I can't afford to buy one. Yet, they can be considered a good investment with lots of precious stones on them, comparedly, a second hand ordinary leather purse cannot be sold while this one has got a better price than the original.  Here you go :

Comenius Partner Finding

How to Find Comenius partners  

The hardest part of Comenius projects starts with partner-finding. It is hard but not impossible . You should be very patient, though. Never yield even if you can’t get any answers for a long time. Keep up searching and sending emails explaining your intention to as many schools as you can. We hope that schools in existing European partnerships will add new partners for a new Comenius application.

There are some ways that can be useful for finding partners : 

Contact seminar

Contact seminars across Europe are run by all the  national agencies and they are intended as partner finding events. Funding is available to cover your travel by your national agency. Moreover, contact seminars are really fun to attend, you meet 20-30 or more colleagues from different countries who come to the seminar to find project partners. You are usually given a corner  to show posters, souvenirs, pictures, etc., to introduce their country, school and mostly their Project  on the exhibition and they lobby and also discuss their Project plans after a kind of ice-breaking party. You also have a chance of city tour for sightseeing and dinner- parties so you have a nice time with fun and work together. 

Global Gateway

This is also for international partnerships. If  you register on the Global Gateway and include details about your planned Project and put Comenius into the keyword search, you will see that there are always schools looking for Comenius contacts, global partners.You can be one of their Comenius Contacts.

Personal contacts

You can search new partners and contacts if you, your family, friends, colleagues or admins know teachers abroad. Local or regional authorities may also have some other close contacts with other European Schools and provide you to be in touch with them.

European Schoolnet

This is an active forum where teachers in the EU advertise for project partners. It is possible to get lots of ideas right across the curriculum, many are for Comenius partners.
